China has an exceptionally big ESL market due to the high demand of ESL teacher coupled with its significant repute as a major tourist destination. In the ‘Teach and Travel Project’ of American TESOL Institute, the teachers for China, will be placed in various parts of the country. The teachers usually will have to take around 22 to 25 classes in a week and teaching hours in a week is approximately 25 to 40 hours. ESL teachers in China not only gets placement in the regular schools but many teachers are placed in language schools and private institutes. The teachers are required to teach both adults and children.
The ESL teachers in China have to work from Sunday to Monday as most of them are language schools. The classes are mainly early in the morning, late in the evening and in the weekends as mostly professionals come to this school to get trained. Breaks are given to the teachers and also holidays in a week. There are holidays on the Chinese National Holidays but on weekends there are regular classes. The working hours of the teachers are approximately for eight hours. These eight hours are inclusive of preparation of lesson plans, helping out in promotional activities and help Chinese colleagues.
The Chinese teachers are given free periods to compensate the
absence to a particular teacher. The system of substitution is applicable
for all teachers in time of emergency.
